Historical St. John's Wort Applications
The historical use of medical St. John's wort is well documented. Commencing 2400 years ago St. John's wort was used as
a nerve tonic, a painkiller for arthritis, menstrual cramping, gastrointestinal problems (such as diarrhea, nausea . . . )
as well as ulcers.
The ancient Greeks and Romans used to treat many ailments, including sciatica and poisonous reptile bites as well as to
ward against evil spirits, placing sprigs of the plant on statues of their Gods. In fact, the genus name Hypericum is from
Greek and means "over an apparition" as the herb was once considered odiferous enough to cause evil spirits to depart.
In the first century St. John’s wort was referred to in Pliny the Elders famous book on natural history for
its bracing quality in treating diarrhea and promoting urine flow and bladder troubles.
Dioscorides, a Roman army surgeon, recommended drinking St Johns wort in his medical text, “For it expels choleric
excrements…” He also recommended rubbing it on burns. Paracelsus, a medical authority of the Renaissance
also wrote of using St. John’s wort to treat wounds. He was also the first to mention using it for psychotic symptoms
which he called “phatasmata”.
During medieval times, the Europeans used the plant to treat all forms of madness (They thought St. Johns wort had magical
properties) as it blooms near the Summer Solstice. The Saltenitan drug list of the thirteenth century also referred to St.
John’s wort as herba demonis fuga--an herb to chase away the devil.
Sixteenth century medical books refers to the plant as Fuga demonum, or devil’s scourge, a term that was repeated
frequently in the literature of the next several hundred years.
The oil made from the flowers was listed in the first Pharmacopoeia Londinensis (1618). 1630 Angelo Sala stated that St.
John’s wort treated illnesses of the imagination, melancholia, anxiety and disturbances of understanding. He wrote,
“St. John’s wort cures these disorders as quick as lightening.” Gerard wrote that its use as
a balm for wounds, burns, ulcers and bites was without equal (Gerard 1633).
There is even evidence that the American Indians used St. John's wort used it in the treatment of Tuberculosis and other
breathing ailments.
Civil War soldiers collected St. John's wort to use on battle wounds. A prolific and hardy plant that threatened grazing
land, a beetle was introduced into the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900's to keep St. John's wort under control.
19th century literature incorporated the use of hypericum to treat melancholia. 19th century British and American literature
stressed the superficial use of the herb for the treatment of burns and wounds. A powerful antibacterial, St. John’s
wort has been used through the centuries as an analgesic (pain reliever) to treat saddle sores and in poultices for certain
lameness's in horses.
More contemporary St. Johns Wort applications
* Over time, and the advent of modern pharmaceutical science, St. John's Wort was nearly forgotten as a medicinal
herb. Only recently has St. John's Wort gained a renewed reputation as an effective treatment for all manner of infirmities
most notably depression. Its complex and diverse chemical makeup has also shown to support depression related infirmities
such as chronic fatigue syndrome, and pms.
* St. John's Wort's antibacterial / antiviral properties render it very useful adjunctive treatment for bacterial
and viral infections.
* St. Johns Wort has also been shown to be useful in treating pulmonary complaints, bladder trouble, suppression of
urine, dysentery, worms and nervous depression.
* St. Johns Wort can act to dissolve and remove bacterially based tumors and boils. It calms the nerves and increase
the flow of urine.
* St. John's Wort is an excellent blood cleanser and blood purifier.
* For Tourette's syndrome - used with Wormseed
* Bells' Palsy (apply directly on face)
* St. Johns Wort antibacterial/viral properties have been shown useful in relieve phlegm obstructions in the chest
and lungs. It can be beneficial in addressing bronchitis as well.
* Like Horsechestnut, St. Johns Wort may be valuable for treating internal bleeding.
* St. Johns Wort is used to treat chronic uterine problems and will correct irregular and painful menstruation.
* St. Johns Wort contains an alkaloid that is a heart and artery stimulant
* Is useful for low back pain
* Mattioli wrote of its use as an emmenagogue and antimalarial (Bombardelli and Morazzoni 1995).
* Most recent research at two of the world's leading medical institutions, New York University and the Weizman Institute
of Science in Israel ,found that 2 of the main constituents of St. John's Wort namely hypercin and pseudohypericin were found
to inhibit the growth of retroviruses( including HIV, the AIDS virus) in animals. Although the results of these studies are
promising, more work needs to be done. The mechanism is thought to involve the production of oxygen free radicals which can
damage the viral envelope.
In a randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study, published in Pharmacopsychiatry a group of 147 people took either
a St. John's Wort extract with 5 percent hyperforin, one with 0.5 percent hyperforin or a placebo. At the end of the six-week
trial, those taking the highest hyperforin dose showed the most positive results. After eight days, those who took the higher
hyperforin showed the greatest changes in delta, theta and alpha-1 brain wave activity. Scientists hypothesize that this is
physical evidence that hyperforin is inhibiting the re-uptake of seratonin, noradrenaline and dopamine.
This finding is so significant that Pharmacopsychiatry, a highly regarded German journal of clinical pharmacology and
psychiatry, recently devoted an entire supplemental issue to hyperforin. It includes several recent clinical studies that
show hyperforin to be the compound responsible for inhibiting neurotransmitter reuptake --- rather than the compound hypericin
as previously believed. With every passing day, clinical research is amassing more data demonstrating hyperforin to be the
key to St. John's Wort's power. "This discovery is extremely exciting for people seeking a dependable route to a positive
outlook on life," said Derrick DeSilva Jr., MD, a practicing internist who teaches at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ,
and is author of Ask The Doctor: Herbs & Supplements for Better Health. "While previous clinical studies have shown
St. John's Wort is effective, questions remained about the identity of the active component and how it relates to efficacy.
Tribulus terrestris is a herb that has been used in the traditional medicine of China and India for centuries. Tribulus
terrestris has long been used as a tonic and aphrodisiac Indian ayurveda practice, where it is known by its Sanskrit name,
"gokshura".
It was only in the mid-'90s when Eastern European Olympic athletes claimed that tribulus contributed to their success
that tribulus became known in the North America.
The active compounds in tribulus are steroidal saponins, mainly furostanol glycosides but also spirostanol glycosides.
These saponins are found primarily in the leaf.
Why Do People Use Tribulus?
Tribulus is most often used for infertility, erectile dysfunction, and low libido. In the last decade, it has become popular
to improve sports performance.
Tribulus has become increasingly used for these conditions because research performed in Bulgaria and Russia indicates
that tribulus increases levels of testosterone (by increasing luteinizing hormone), DHEA, and estrogen.
Chitosan
Chitosan: Where did it come from?
Regardless of chitosan's miraculous overview, it is a very simple substance which has been around for ages. It is
taken from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. It is processed by removing the shells from
shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, and crabs. The shells are then ground into a pulverous powder. This powder is then deacetylated,
or basically stripped of specific chemical groups which allows the compound to thus actively "soak up fats." Or
so this is what the producers claim. It has been used in the past in the process of detoxifying water. It was simply spread
over the surface of water, where it would immediately absorb any toxic substances such as greases, oils, or dangerous heavy
metals. The process is so complete that a scum forms over the surface of water and is then easily removed. For this reason,
chitosan is extremely popular all over the world in water purification plants. The present form of chitosan has just been
introduced recently as a weight loss supplement
Properties
Guaraná consists of a crystallizable principle, called guaranine, identical with caffeine, which exists in the seeds,
united with tannic acid, catechutannic acid starch, and a greenish fixed oil.
From the tannin it contains it is useful for mild forms of leucorrhoea, diarrhoea, etc., but its chief use in Europe and
America is for headache, especially if of a rheumatic nature. It is a gentle excitant and serviceable where the brain is irritated
or depressed by mental exertion, or where there is fatigue or exhaustion from hot weather. It has the same chemical composition
as caffeine, theine and cocaine, and the same physiological action. Its benefit is for nervous headache or the distress that
accompanies menstruation, or exhaustion following dissipation. It is not recommended for chronic headache or in cases where
it is not desirable to increase the temperature, or excite the heart or increase arterial tension. Dysuria often follows its
administration. It is used by the Indians for bowel complaints, but is not indicated in cases of constipation or high blood
pressure.
Guarana
It's cultivation dates to pre-columbian times. The indians, the first inhabitants of the Amazon, domesticated the guaraná
plant. Botanists actually believe that the current plants, even those found in dense forests, are the remains of indigenous
cultivation in the past. Guaraná was, amongst others, grown by the Maués and Andira tribes from the 'lower Amazon'.
BRAHMI has been used since time immemorial as a tonic for improving memory. In the gurukuls of ancient India there was
the practice to regularly administer Brahmi to young students to help them learn sacred hymns.
Although people in India, especially ayurvedic physicians, knew about Brahmi’s benefits thousands of years ago,
modern research on it was conducted recently by the central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow. The trails have resulted in
establishing that this long treasured herb, besides possessing antioxidant properties, also has the amazing ability to facilitate
learning and enhance memory and concentration.
Ayurvedic tests describe Brahmi as medhya, a medicine that braces the mind to carry cognitive functions and intellectual
pursuits. But ancient authors seem to believe that the healing effects of Brahmi extend far beyond mind and brain. Brahmi
is not only a memory-booster and intellect-promoting herb; it is also a tranquilliser, a muscle relaxant, an anti-convulsant,
a blood purifier, and an anti-pyretic, carminative and digestive agent.
Though Brahmi is beneficial for maintaining the tridoshic balance, ayurvedic physicians believe it to be the drug of choice
for counteracting the vitiated vata dosha — the factor which governs the nervous system,
Brahmi is known for its salutary effect in anxiety, depression, hypertension, sleeplessness, mental retardation, insanity
and hysteria. Acharya Chakradutta has written that Brahmi is beneficial in all types of epilepsy. Ancient texts describe the
use of Brahmi in a number of other disorders like biliousness, ulcers, splenomegaly, asthma, skin diseases and in general
and senile debility.
Brahmi enhances the mind’s ability to learn and concentrate. As it simultaneously calms and invigorates the
mind, it is a very good medicine for reducing the effects of stress and nervous anxiety. It also helps maintain the clarity
of thought and has proved effective in treating ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) in hyperactive children, and age-related
mental disorders in old persons.
Action:
Brahmi is a nervine tonic that enhances learning, academic performance and improves mental ability. It is used in Behavioral
disorders and Memory disturbances.
Seaweed
unk food could be made healthier by adding an exotic seaweed, say British scientists.
The highly-fibrous seaweed extract, alginate, could be used to increase the fiber content of cakes, burgers and other
types of food which usually contain large amounts of fat and a low degree of healthy nutrients, say the team.
Scientists at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne publish their findings in the academic journal Critical Reviews in
Food Science and Nutrition, in a paper detailing alginate's many benefits to the body. They believe it will be a valuable
weapon in the international battle against obesity, diabetes and heart disease and diseases such as bowel cancer.
The research paper examines the properties of a brown-colored seaweed called Lessonia and Laminaria, found in the Far
East, South America and parts of Norway and Scotland. The seaweed is processed in the laboratory to produce the extract, alginate,
a carbohydrate compound which is a tasteless and odorless off-white colored powder.
The paper shows that alginate has been proved to strengthen mucus, the body's natural protection of the gut wall, can
slow digestion down, and can slow the uptake of nutrients in the body.
Moreover, alginate is high in fiber and has been proved to be palatable and safe, and as such is already in widespread
use by the food industry as a gelling agent, to reconstitute powdered foods, and to thicken the frothy head of premium lagers.
Studies have shown that eating high-fiber diets can help reduce the incidence of diseases such as bowel cancer. Good sources
of fiber are fruit and vegetables, brown bread and cereals like bran flakes.
One of the research team, Professor Jeff Pearson, of Newcastle University's Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences,
said: "We're just not eating enough fiber, yet we need this to keep us healthy. The problem is that a lot of people don't
enjoy many of the foods that are high in fiber, like fruit and vegetables, yet to consume the recommended daily amount of
fiber they would have to eat a lot of these types of foods.
"We believe it's hard to change people's habits and that the most practical solution is to improve the food they
do eat. With a burger, for example, you would simply remove some of the fat and replace it with the seaweed extract, which
is an entirely natural product from a sustainable resource. You'd have a healthier burger and it's unlikely to taste any different.
"This compound can also be added to any number of foods, such as synthetic creams and yogurts. With pork pies, one
of my favorite foods, it could replace the gelatine which usually covers the meat, as the seaweed extract has gelling properties
too."
Prof Pearson, who has already made loaves of bread containing the seaweed extract which passed the taste test with colleagues,
added: "Bread is probably the best vehicle to reach the general population because most people eat it. Adding the seaweed
extract could quadruple the amount of fiber in white bread."
